Our project in a few words…

During the period 1523-1570, San Marco witnessed a unique collaboration between Italian architect Jacopo Sansovino and Flemish composer Adrian Willaert, with music being performed in accordance with the architecture of the Basilica, and architectural modifications carried out to accentuate new musical compositions. The goal of this project is to study this interplay between architecture and music. The final outcome will be a timeline summarizing the changes in architecture and musical style using acoustic simulations to recreate the sound effects at different locations within the Basilica. This would help to gain a deeper understanding of the music at San Marco during this golden period of collaboration.
